Obviously very dated, but no worse or no better than most girls' books of the era where the main characters are always white, and well-off.
Good read. Interesting twists and turn.
This book seems to be teaching girls to climb the social ladder while by projecting themselves as owners of charitable and selfless good intentions as they are all members of Hostess House.
The book omits the last names of all the girls, except those with socially prominent last names such as Ford, Nelson, aka Little Captain, (an allusion to the British Lord Heratio Nelson, I presume) Haley, Anderson, (I think the message here is you are a no body without the last name of a rich famous person.) Girls are taught to value letters with foreign postmarks, and they swoon and quiver over all their brave and courageous beaus who are going to the war front.
The Germans mentioned in this book are all thieves, spies and cheats. The girls deify their men for catching Germans. The weak girls histrionically faint and express agonizing fancy etc. The best thing about this book is that it is free of profanity and uses the elegant language people spoke in the early part of the 20th century.
I started reading this series while a preteen, probably 50 years ago. When I found the series on line I picked them up as a nostalgic read. Although I can't picture a modern girl of today choosing this book, it was a delightful escape into another simpler time. Do read the first 4 books in order.
